I think it’s the best foundation

2019 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement award winner Alan Alda when asked about his training as an actor:

I was crazy. It’s not something I recommend to sensible people, but what I thought was my natural genius was a collection of mannerisms that took me 15 years to get rid of. The one bit of training I had was learning improvisation with Paul Sills and Viola Spolin, who really revolutionized theater in the country through Viola’s work on improvisation. I recommend that to young people who want to become actors because I think it’s the best foundation.”
